Burnout Revisited: Three Years On — The Cost of Not Paying Attention

June 5, 2026  ·  hackingy

“No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.” — Albert Einstein

Three years ago I wrote about burnout. I could see it bubbling. I could see where it was heading. And I said then what I’ll say again now — burnout is not something that happens to you. It is something that builds, slowly, with warning signs flashing long before the system shuts down.

Just like an athletic injury.

For Those Who Were Paying Attention

For those who took that post seriously — who started assessing, who implemented protocols, who began taking their recovery as seriously as their output — they are navigating today’s extraordinary economic and social pressures with remarkable clarity and resilience.

They have sovereignty over their human. And that sovereignty is everything right now.

For Those Who Didn’t

For those who didn’t course correct — and I say this with deep compassion, not judgement — the cost is showing up everywhere. In corporations. In individuals. In the quality of decisions being made at every level.

An exhausted system cannot think clearly. It cannot lead well. It cannot innovate, connect, or sustain. And yet we are watching people — smart, capable, well-intentioned people — make costly mistakes because they are running on empty.

Pressure and chaos never fare well on an exhausted system.

So Why Are People Still Choosing This?

Because it is a choice. A conscious one.

Not always an easy one to see — but a choice nonetheless. We choose to skip sleep. We choose to skip recovery. We choose to keep pushing when every signal in our body is telling us to stop. We choose the doing over the being. We choose the external over the internal.

And the world right now is amplifying all of it. The noise is louder. The uncertainty is greater. The pace is relentless.

History Has Always Shown Us This

Major disruption is where the deepest change occurs. We are at one of those moments right now. The question is not whether change is coming — it already is. The question is whether you are positioned to navigate it with clarity, or whether you are just being swept along by it.

Chaos cannot be solved from within chaos.

The Blessing in the Breaking

To anyone reading this who is struggling right now — I want to say the same thing I say to my injured athletes: this is a blessing.

You weren’t paying attention somewhere. And now you have the opportunity — perhaps the gift — of course correcting.

The pain teacher is your best teacher. What lessons are you learning? What are you willing to change?

Start with you. Not your team. Not your organisation. Not the economy.

You first. Then we. Then us.

That is the only order that works. You cannot pour from an empty vessel. You cannot lead from a depleted state. You cannot build something sustainable on a broken foundation.

What Does Course Correcting Look Like?

It starts where it always starts — with the foundation:

  • Sleep quality — are you actually recovering overnight?
  • Recovery capacity — can your nervous system handle the pressure you’re under?
  • Assessing — do you actually know what’s happening inside your human right now?

If you’re not assessing, you’re guessing. And guessing in this environment is a luxury none of us can afford.

The world needs you functioning at your best. Not surviving. Thriving.

What are you going to do about it today?
